Ultrasound Program Curriculum – What Subjects You Will Study
You have to know what you will study as part of an ultrasound program. This will help you decide whether this profession is right for you and what you will have to focus on in order to complete the course successfully. Here is an overview of the National Education Curriculum for Sonography. All courses follow it, even though some subjects might be excluded or taught less extensively, due to the nature of the specific program.
Students take general education subjects. These include mathematics, physics and statistics. In addition, you can expect to have classes in information technology, communications and psychology and human behavior. It should be pointed out that only the fundamentals of these disciplines are studied, so you should not expect the classes to be particularly hard.
There are a number of health related subjects in each ultrasound program. You will study anatomy and physiology as well as patient care. These are the main subjects in every course. You can also expect to study sectional anatomy and pathophysiology. Most courses teach medical ethics and law as well.
You will also have sonography specific classes. The main subject in the curriculum is sonographic physics and instrumentation. Most courses cover work-related musculoskeletal disorders as well. This subject is supposed to help you in dealing with the physically demanding aspects of the job.
There are a number of specialty subjects that are included in the standard curricula in different forms. Some schools teach the basics of all while others allow students to choose a focus area. The specialty subjects include abdominal sonography and its subcategories, superficial structures, musculoskeletal and breast sonography and neurosonography. You can also study obstetric, gynecological, vascular and cardiac sonography.
The ultrasound program curriculum is quite demanding, but the subjects are not as difficult as they might seem at first glance. Generally, the hard studying should not put you off, if you are determined to become a top professional.
